At its height, GNI had around 3,000 members in Kenya, and Mackenzie’s TV and YouTube channels attracted millions of viewers. Even so, the increasingly radical ideas he put forward on these platforms caused little concern to the authorities. A few days later, another group of herders found five emaciated boys, aged between 10 and 13, stumbling through the forest.

When Mongeli, his wife, died in childbirth in 2009, his teachings became even stricter and more idiosyncratic. Undeterred, Mackenzie soon started a new church with a married couple from his old congregation, David Kahindi and Ruth Kadzo. They called it the House of the Lord, and held services in the couple’s front garden in Malindi. Naomi, one of Kahindi’s and Kadzo’s daughters, attested that the entire family embraced Mackenzie. At the time, they thought he “was a man with a good heart”, she told me.

When I first met Salema Masha, a small 30-year-old woman with a soft voice, she insisted on speaking to me on the side of a quiet road in Malindi. As a survivor of Shakahola forest, she did not want to be seen talking to a journalist. Some of Mackenzie’s thugs now lived in town, and she feared that they’d threaten her if they saw us together.

LA architecture experts pick the city's most beautiful buildings
Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight. Robert Bartleh Cummings, more commonly known as Rob Zombie, came to public prominence in the early '90s as the frontman of the heavy metal band White Zombie.

Many of these starving people refused the rescuers’ help, telling the group that they were on their way to heaven. Mangi remembered one woman asking him to leave her because she “wanted to meet Christ”. Mathias Shipeta, an employee of HAKI Africa, an NGO that promotes human rights, said that he started telling the victims he had been sent by Jesus to persuade them to accept his assistance. You can also take a regularly scheduled tour of the Schindler-designed Mackey Apartments which are nearby. The original structure was designed and built by architect Richard Neutra with a no-interest loan from a Dutch philanthropist.
When Denise doesn't come home, her father Don calls the police to report her missing. Don, a former policeman, is called to the scene to help the deputies search. They arrive at the Firefly house and Wydell questions Mother Firefly about the missing teens. Mother Firefly shoots Wydell in the head and kills him; Don and Steve are then killed by Otis when they find more bodies of missing cheerleaders in the barn, along with a barely conscious Mary.
Culture & society
This house is most likely recognized from being used in the movie The Big Lebowski. It was built from 1961 to 1963 It was built as a cave-like dwelling that embraces nature. I am really looking forward to checking this one out in person in the future. The Ennis House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924. The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks. The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard.
They claimed that they had been forced to starve themselves in the forest. Many people had already died – most from starvation, but others had been strangled or bludgeoned. The house is open for guided tours without appointment most Saturdays.

The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out. You cannot go beyond the gate but it is truly spectacular to see.
It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. People tend to be their own worst critics — although critics have plenty of scathing things to say about House of 1000 Corpses. While House of 1000 Corpses is brilliant to many, it was, as mentioned earlier, Zombie's directorial debut, so he's bound to look back and find issues with it. This is probably exacerbated by the fact that he took a different artistic approach to the following Firefly movies.
The cult Mackenzie led had roots in conventional evangelical Christianity. After the country became independent from Britain in 1963, established Christian denominations – such as the Anglican, Catholic and Presbyterian churches – continued to be popular. The country’s president, Daniel arap Moi, was happy to encourage the growth of evangelical churches, as leaders of the traditional denominations tended to criticise his corrupt, autocratic rule.
This did not go down well with the leadership, and Mackenzie was expelled. Mackenzie was born in 1976 in Lunga Lunga, a town near Kenya’s border with Tanzania, the fifth of ten children. His family were members of the Africa Brotherhood Church, an evangelical movement founded in the 1940s by anti-colonialist Africans. As a teenager, Mackenzie became the choirmaster and a Sunday school teacher. By the 1990s there were hundreds of new evangelical churches in Kenya, many of whose preachers exerted influence on local affairs. Pius Muiru, the leader of a movement called the Maximum Miracle Centre, even ran for president in 2007 (though he won just 0.1% of the vote).
Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean. It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile! The house was built in 1929 as a vacation home for the Adamson family but eventually became their fulltime residence. After the death of the owners, the state won a lawsuit to put beach parking where the house is. The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains.
On April 14th 2023 – after weeks of bureaucratic delays – a group of police officers, pathologists, grave-diggers, human-rights activists, journalists and locals (including Mangi) descended on Shakahola forest. It had recently rained and the red soil was slippery, making the road impassable for their 4x4s. The group had to walk the last few kilometres in the heat, their eyes locked nervously on the ground.
You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner. About last night…thanks to @yielddesignco for inviting us into the sowden house and introducing us to your black dahlia cbd candle. That was epic and a long time dream of mine to see inside this historic lloyd wright house. The other two films in the Firefly trilogy aren't even the only sequels Zombie has gone on to make. An animated musical "sidequel" released in 2009, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, is also part of the tale. Two teenage couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of serial killers end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.
